It may be that Jane Got a Gun, but it’s looking more and more like Michael Fassbender will be its triggerman: Our spies tell us that Fassbender is negotiating to star in the Western that’s already attracted Natalie Portman and We Need to Talk About Kevin director Lynne Ramsay.
In Jane, Portman, who is also producing, would play a woman married to an outlaw who returns home bullet-riddled and half-dead, betrayed by criminal confederates hot on his heels. Fassbender would play the ex-lover Portman seeks out to help her defend her farm from the imminent onslaught of black hats.
The project is being made independently, with the budget well under $20 million. That’s cheap enough to be financed entirely through Portman’s handsomecharlie films, which has backing from 1821, the financing outfit run by Greek shipping heir (is there any other kind?) Paris Latsis and Terry Dougas.
And yes, while Latsis and Dougas have the dubious distinction of having executive produced the Cameron Diaz horror film The Box – one of the few films ever to receive an outright F CinemaScore — Jane Got a Gun is actually a cracklingly paced script by Brian Duffield that made Hollywood’s annual “black list” last year.
It will be interesting to see if a deal can be sealed with Fassbender, who’s currently in the midst of shooting The Counselor with his old Prometheusdirector Ridley Scott. If the talks continue to go as well as they have, we hear the plan is to put Jane before cameras by early next year.

Great Scott! Jeremy Renner, Javier Bardem and Natalie Portman are all rumoured to be joining Michael Fassbender for Ridley Scott’s The Counselor.
Although not officially confirmed, rumours are circulating that Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker), Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men) and Natalie Portman (Black Swan) are to join Michael Fassbender (Shame) in Ridley Scott’s (Gladiator) next directing gig, The Counselor. That’s an Oscar-friendly bunch right there.
According to Collider, the three heavyweights are all keen to sign up with the legendary director on what’s sure to be an exceptional project.
Fassbender has already taken the lead role as the highbrow lawyer who falls into the world of illegal drugs while on a case, with Natalie Portman thought to be in line to play his fiancée.
It’s currently unclear if Bardem and Renner are both vying for the same villainous role as the man who introduces Fassbender to the drug trade.
Meanwhile, Bardem will next be seen in this year’s highly anticipatedSkyfall, the welcome return of James Bond to (hopefully) high-octane action by director Sam Mendes, which opens on 26 October 2012.
Bardem isn’t the only one with an action movie in the works: Renner will hit our screens first as Hawkeye in Josh Whedon’s blockbuster Avengers Assemble, which opens on 27 April 2012, before taking the baton from Matt Damon in The Bourne Legacy.
Currently Ridley Scott’s number one, Michael Fassbender is carving an exceptionally diverse career. He stars in Scott’s Prometheus, opening 1 June 2012, which is being hyped as the scariest sci-fi movie since, well, Alien.

Natalie is joining not one but two Malick films.
Knight Of Cups shoots this summer and also stars Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett and Isabel Lucas.
Lawless shoots in the fall with an even better cast of Bale, Blanchett, Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara and Haley Bennett.
Nothing is known about the plots aside from the fact that some pre production work was done for Lawless during the Austin City Limits music festival. With the films shooting back to back and with at least three cast crossovers, The Playlist are wondering whether the films might be connected.
Wow. Just wow.
